ABSTENTION (+) . – While I believe many of the deliberations made on this file are positive, there are certain aspects that should remain within the competence of Member States. The Commission’s competence in national employment affairs should not be enhanced and we should avoid the commitment to establishing an EU-wide minimum wage. Member State labour markets and economies are too diverse to fully and effectively implement measures of such a kind. Instead, instruments currently in place for EU-level employment affairs should see continued usage for these purposes when appropriate. I therefore chose to abstain.
